The Innovators in International Health (IIH) program was created at MIT in 2007 in order to encourage collaboration between scientists and entrepreneurs in the hopes of promoting the development of new healthcare technologies. The program focuses on the needs of developing nations, and it offers a product development model designed to quickly turn innovative ideas into products. IIH is currently constructing an online database of experts from around the world so that these people will be able to learn about each other, and the organization is also running a program to connect experienced scientists with experienced businesspeople. A major goal of the organization is to facilitate clinical trials in settings such as Nicaragua, Tanzania, and Pakistan. Many studies designed to improve the way in which tuberculosis is treated are already underway.
