Forum Abstract
Oxygen and carbon dioxide regulation is critical for sustaining life. There is a large body of data describing the effect of hypoxia and hyperoxia on biological process, with less relatively known about CO2. In the area of sleep-disordered breathing, while it is known that hypocapnia and hypercapnia have profound effects on regulation of breathing (especially hypocapnia-associated central sleep apnea and periodic breathing), clinical translation has not occurred until now. The presentation will discuss the role of CO2 manipulation in the adjunctive treatment of chemoreflex-modulated sleep apnea, including an investigational device, the Positive Airway Pressure Gas Modulator (PAPGAM) and dead space adapted to positive airway pressure treatment modalities, Enhanced Expiratory Rebreathing Space (EERS).
