CIMIT Names Dale Larson as Site Miner at the
Charles Stark Draper Laboratory
Dale Larson, director of the Biomedical Engineering Program Office at the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory, has been named CIMIT site miner for that institution.
A site miner identifies promising researchers within the organization, and helps them access CIMIT funding and educational programs. The site miner also helps scientists to get the most out of the mentoring and consulting resources offered by CIMIT.
“I am very pleased that Dale Larson will be working with CIMIT in this capacity, for there are many bright scientists at the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory,” said John Parrish, MD, executive director of CIMIT. “We expect exciting, innovative ideas to come from Dale’s role as site miner at Draper.”
Draper President Jim Shields said, “The primary objective of CIMIT is to foster collaboration among scientists, engineers, and clinicians to improve patient care through innovative diagnostics and therapies. Dr. Jeff Borenstein has done an outstanding job as Draper’s site miner to CIMIT, effectively reaching out to clinicians and researchers to define problems for which the Lab’s critical engineering capabilities can be applied. Jeff will continue to support CIMIT programs as needed but will focus more exclusively on his technical research work.
“Dale Larson will assume this CIMIT liaison role for Draper and brings a broad set of experiences and contacts from former positions in industry and at Harvard Medical School. As head of Draper’s Biomedical Engineering Programs Office, he works closely with Jeff in advancing Draper’s biomedical engineering initiatives.”
Previously, Larson was the director of the Technology and Engineering Center at Harvard Medical School. Also, he had been the president and chief operating officer Genomics Collaborative Inc., a genomics startup.
His career includes a tenure as director of Arthur D. Little’s Clinical Instrumentation and Laboratory Automation practice within the Medical Products Development Practice. Earlier in his career, he served with ATT Bell Laboratories, Thermedics Inc. and Level 1 Technologies.
Larson holds a BS from the University of Virginia in mechanical engineering and an MSc from Stanford University. He holds two patents.
Larson commented, “I am pleased to be assuming the role as site miner. A large part of my job at Draper is scouting for unmet needs and this would be a natural extension. After 25 years in medical and scientific R & D, I am comfortable with working with physicians and researchers.
“Also, Draper is collaborative by design. Everything we do is built around a collaborative business model. This is a perfect fit with CIMIT’s philosophy.”
Jeffrey Borenstein, PhD, former site miner at Draper, remains co-leader of the Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Program at CIMIT.
