John M. Collins, PhD, named Director of Technology Implementation at CIMIT

John M. Collins, PhD, a technology and business veteran with more than two decades of experience in leadership positions at pioneering Boston/ Cambridge-area technology enterprises, has been named Director of Technology Implementation at CIMIT. He joins to support collaborative teams across CIMIT’s consortium of Boston’s premier clinical and engineering institutions and to help accelerate the commercialization of technology-enabled device innovations that impact patient care.

Dr. Collins was president of TIAX LLC, the Cambridge technology processing company, before coming to CIMIT. He brings to CIMIT more than 25 years of hands-on, international experience operating at the junction of technology and business with leading organizations.

Dr. Collins joined Arthur D. Little Inc. (ADL) with an initial focus of forming a medical device development practice. He went on to lead ADL’s business in Asia and then its Cambridge-based technology and innovation business. In close collaboration with founder and owner, Dr. Kenan Sahin, they shaped TIAX LLC by transitioning ADL’s technology and innovation business into a 150-person, privately held technology development and commercialization business, successfully blending services work for government and commercial clients with technology development and licensing.

An innovator himself, Dr. Collins holds more than 20 U.S. patents on new products and manufacturing processes, including trocars and staplers for MIS, blood fluid warmers, and tendon and ligament repair methods. He received a BS in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and an MS and PhD in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a concentration in bio-fluids.
