Emergency Department of the Future

CREATING ADVANCED FACILITIES AND MONITORING SYSTEMS TO EFFICIENTLY TRIAGE INCOMING AND WAITING PATIENTS

CIMIT Emergency Department of the Future

With CIMIT support, the “Of-the-Futures” learning-laboratory model has spread to other settings across the continuum of care including the ER. Today emergency rooms nationwide are over-crowded and lacking a system in place to monitor clinical deterioration of waiting patients in real-time. CIMIT is currently supporting the design of an Emergency Department of the Future at BIDMC. The proposed system supports multiple ambulatory patients in crowded Emergency Department conditions utilizing:

  • Patient triage monitoring and location tracking in smart, wireless, wearable monitor
  • Clinican's central ED Dashboard summarizes patient status and location
  • Nurse's PDA provides alerts, patient location guidance, and mobile triage support

Mission

To design Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center's innovative emergency facility with advanced informatics capabilities to create a physiologic monitoring and pain management surveillance system.
